Preliminary findings showed that the explosion may have been orchestrated by two of the individuals present during the incident.

One person was injured following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion at a local eatery in the Shafshafey, Mandera.

In a statement on Monday, April 8, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the explosion, which ripped through the building, left the hotel's rooftop blown off and visible cracks in its walls.

"A multi-agency security team has launched an investigation into an IED explosion that occurred earlier today at an eatery in Shafshafey area of Mandera, leaving one person injured.

"Responding swiftly, the team established that the explosion had blown off the hotel's rooftop and caused visible cracks in the walls," the statement read.

According to the investigating agency, four customers were inside the establishment at the time of the incident.

DCI revealed that while three customers managed to escape unscathed, one individual sustained serious injuries, and was immediately rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital.

"At the time of the incident, four customers were inside the eatery. Three of them escaped unhurt, while one individual sustained a fractured left femur and pellet injuries to the abdomen.

"The injured victim was promptly rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment,' the statement continued.

DCI stated that preliminary findings suggested that the explosion may have been orchestrated by two of the individuals present during the incident.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that two of those who escaped unhurt are the masterminds behind the attack. They have since been apprehended and are currently in custody as investigations continue," the statement added.

Meanwhile, security personnel are actively searching for a bodaboda rider believed to have transported the suspects to the scene.

“Officers are pursuing a bodaboda rider who brought the suspects to the hotel and fled immediately after the incident,” the statement concluded.
