Following the unceremonious departure of Lucas Meso from the helm of Agriculture Finance Corporation (AFC) in October 2020, the agency advertised for the position of the Managing Director.
Interviews were conducted after which the shortlisting was done and results sent to the Board. Three candidates were shortlisted and names presented to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya for gazettement.
A source adept with the matter told NairobiLeo.co.ke that the agency and the CS moved to illegally appoint his tribesmen as the MD of AFC. The new MD George Kubai, is said to have come third in the interview rankings.

He had previously been appointed by Petroleum CS John Munyes to the National Oil Corporation of Kenya. His stint as acting Chief executive Officer at the oil company was marred by allegations of suspicious dealings and corruption.
The source criticised CS Munya for blatantly ignoring the first and second candidates in the ranking for the AFC job only to appoint his tribesmen who was third in the shortlisting.
"It goes without saying that the that the only consideration for appointing George Kubai was only his tribe," the source stated.
Reports indicate that CS Munya issued a directive to AFC Board Chairperson Franklin Bett to hold special board meetings by March 10 to approve the new CEO. It is said that Kubai will be gazetted by March 12 prior to fully assuming the reigns on March 15.
"The Board has equally been threatened to be disbanded by Friday if they fail to Approve the new CEO by Friday," the source stated.
"The helpless Board Members are now at the mercy of the Cabinet Secretary who is hell bent in running the corporation as his "kiosk"," he added.
He noted that once vibrant Development Finance Institution is a clear target of corruption.
Wrangles between the CS and board members are said to have instilled fear in them, hindering their service delivery for fear of intimidation.
Kubai is said to have been appointed despite showing little knowledge of agrifinance during the interviews.
The results of the interview from reliable sources indicate that the First Person in the interview was Jonah Orumoi with 79 Marks, followed by Naftali Dickson with 66 Marks and George Kubai with 60 Marks.
