This comes months after President William Ruto announced the launch of a national initiative to construct over 400 modern markets across the country.
Announced on January 23, 2025, Ruto said the plan aims to bolster the agricultural sector and stimulate economic growth.
The announcement was made during the launch of the Luanda Modern Market in Vihiga County.
"We are constructing over 400 modern markets across the country to strengthen the agricultural sector and drive economic growth in rural and urban areas. Through these markets, farmers will access a larger pool of traders.
"Launched the construction of the Luanda Modern Market in Vihiga County that will accommodate more than 2,000 traders. Another four such markets will be constructed in the County, offering businesses access to advanced storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses," Ruto said.
Once fully completed, the market will feature key amenities, including an ablution block, an ICT hub, a cold room for preserving perishable goods, a food court, and a dedicated space for young mothers.
The modern facility, which will accommodate over 500 traders on market days, is poised to attract vendors and buyers from neighboring counties such as Vihiga and Bungoma.
