The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of strong surface winds affecting the coastal and eastern parts of the country. 

In an update on Sunday, May 25, the department said conditions are expected to persist between 9 AM on May 25 and 9 AM on May 26.

According to a surface wind map released by the agency highlights the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and parts of Eastern Kenya are highlighted as the most affected regions.

“Strong southerly winds continue over much of the Coast and Eastern Kenya through 24–25 May. Gusts may reach over 35 knots in some areas. Coastal waters remain choppy with wave heights around 2.0 meters,” the department stated.

Small boats and fishing vessels are advised to avoid venturing far offshore during this period due to the risk posed by high winds and choppy waters.

This comes two days after Kenya Met cautioned Kenyans living in the Coast, South-eastern lowlands, and Northwestern Kenya regions of strong winds. 

In an advisory, the agency said the strong southerly winds of more than 30 knots (15.4 m/s) are expected in the three regions starting Friday, May 23, with the wind speed strengthening to more than 35 knots (18.0 m/s) on Saturday and Sunday.

“Strong southerly winds of more than 30 knots (15.4 m/s) are expected over the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands and Northwestern Kenya on Friday, 23rd May 2025. The wind speed is expected to strengthen to more than 35 knots (18.0 m/s) on Saturday, 24th May 2025, and Sunday, 25th May 2025.

"Wind speeds are likely to reduce to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) on Monday, 26th May, 2025,” the advisory read in part.

The department also warned of large waves exceeding two meters on the Kenyan coast from Friday to Sunday, May 25, 2025. The waves are expected to reduce to below 2.0 meters on Monday, 26th May 2025.

Strong winds and large ocean waves are expected to impact Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Kitui counties.

The counties of Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale will also be affected.
