The Senate has announced a special sitting scheduled for Monday, June 30.

The Senate has announced a special sitting scheduled for Monday, June 30, to address urgent matters, including the impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan.

In a statement issued on Saturday, June 28, the Senate confirmed that the sitting was prompted by a formal notification from the Isiolo County Assembly.

“The Senate will hold a special sitting on Monday, June 30, 2025, to deliberate the impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan. This follows a formal notification from the Isiolo County Assembly Speaker, received on June 27, outlining their resolution for impeachment.

"Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has issued a Gazette Notice convening senators to meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber,” the statement read.

In addition to the impeachment issue, senators will also deliberate on the Report of the Mediation Committee on the Division of Revenue Bill.

“In addition to the impeachment charges against Governor Abdi, lawmakers will also deliberate on the Report of the Mediation Committee on the Division of Revenue Bill, 2025 (National Assembly Bills No. 10 of 2025), alongside the agreed version of the same Bill,” the statement added.

This comes two weeks after the Isiolo High Court issued temporary relief to Hassan by halting impeachment proceedings against him.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, June 16, by Justice Nyaga Heston Mbogo, the High Court certified the application filed by the governor as urgent and issued conservatory orders barring the County Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment motion.

“I am satisfied that the petitioner/applicant has made out a case that warrants grant of the relief sought.

"Pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-partes, a conservatory order is hereby issued restraining, barring and or preventing the Respondents either by themselves or their agents from admitting, processing, debating or considering or in any manner whatsoever considering the Notice of Motion dated 10th June, 2025 for proposed removal from Office of the Governor of Isiolo County by impeachment founded on the Notice of Motion presented and intended to be debated on Tuesday, 17th June, 2025 or any other day the Respondent may set," Justice Mbogo ruled.

A Notice of Motion was tabled against Hassan over alleged abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and gross misconduct among other charges.

The motion was seconded by Meja Golicha and backed by virtually all 18 MCAs.

Key accusations include unauthorized hiring of 36 advisors despite the legal cap being four and employing two deputy county secretaries instead of the permitted one.

Other accusations include failure to complete development projects, inability to meet county revenue targets, and making derogatory remarks against Senator Fatuma Dullo.
