President William Ruto has donated Ksh1 million to the family of Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, a hawker who was fatally shot by a police officer during protests in Nairobi CBD.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 2, Kangema MP Peter Irungu Kihungi, who led a delegation to visit the bereaved family, confirmed the donation and conveyed Ruto's personal message of sympathy and commitment to justice.

"We visited the home of the late Boniface Mwangi Kariuki to offer heartfelt condolences in solidarity with his grieving family following the tragic police shooting.

"The President has donated Ksh1M to the family as we join to convey his condolences and steadfast commitment to ensuring justice is served," he said.

Kihungi noted that the family is yet to record their statement with the police, however, noting that relevant authorities are working on it.

"The family has not been able to record a statement with the police in pursuance for justice. In that regard, PS Omollo’s office is committed to following without delay," he added.

This comes days after Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata pledged continued support for Kariuki's family.

In a statement on Tuesday, July 1, Kang’ata expressed sorrow over the death of Kariuki who succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.

“On behalf of the residents of Murang'a County, the Murang'a County Government conveys its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Boniface Kariuki.

“Boniface, a humble and unarmed hawker, was tragically shot by police officers in Nairobi's Central Business District a few days ago. He had been receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, where we hoped for his recovery. Sadly, he has since passed away,” he said.

Kang’ata confirmed that the county government had already offered assistance to Kariuki during his hospitalization and assured the public that the support would continue for his family during this period of mourning.

“The Murang'a County Government had extended support to Boniface during his hospitalization and will continue to stand with his family during this difficult time,” he added.
