President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement on Monday, July 14, Ruto said the Kenyan people stand with Nigeria in this moment of national mourning.
"On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Kenya, I extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria upon the passing of H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he said.
Ruto noted that Buhari’s death is not just a national loss for Nigeria, but one that echoes across the continent.
"President Buhari demise is a loss not only to the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also to the entire African Continent, which has been immeasurably enriched by his wisdom and steadfast commitment to the liberation and prosperity of the Nigerian people," he added.

Ruto went on to praise Buhari’s strong stance against corruption and terrorism, describing him as a tireless advocate for peace and regional cooperation.
"During his tenure in office, President Buhari championed the fight against corruption, advanced regional security initiatives to counter terrorism, and supported Africa’s agenda for economic integration," he continued.
Reflecting on Kenya’s relationship with Nigeria during Buhari’s presidency, Ruto recalled Buhari’s 2016 state visit to Nairobi and his congratulatory message following Ruto’s 2022 election victory.
"Kenya recalls with warmth his State Visit to Nairobi in January 2016, which marked a significant milestone in our bilateral relations. We also remember with sincere appreciation his message of congratulations in August 2022, following my election as President of Kenya, a testament to his abiding faith in democratic governance and to the enduring relations between Kenya and Nigeria," he further said.
In conclusion, Ruto urged Africans to carry forward Buhari’s legacy by pursuing unity, peace, and shared prosperity across the continent.
"In this time of grief, Kenya stands in solidarity with the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. May the legacy of President Buhari continue to inspire all of us in our pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity across Africa," he concluded.
Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London at the age of 82.
Following his death, President Bola Tinubu ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to oversee the repatriation of Buhari’s body and preparations for a state funeral.
Buhari is expected to be buried in accordance with Islamic rites in his home state of Katsina.
