Ababu Namwamba's mother passed away on Thursday, August 7.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba is in mourning following the death of his mother, Mama Agatha Maina Namwamba.

In a statement on Friday, August 8, Namwamba announced that his mother passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 12:30 pm.

“With profound sadness and a deep sense of loss, the Peter and Agatha Namwamba family regrets to announce the demise of our Matriarch, Mama Agatha Maina Namwamba, who departed from our midst today, Thursday 7th August 2025 at 12.30 pm,” Namwamba stated.

The Kenyan Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said the family has appointed Prof. Thomas Nanyingi Namwamba as the official spokesperson during this mourning period.

“The family spokesman, Prof. Thomas Nanyingi Namwamba, will handle communications moving forward,” he stated.

Further, the former CS requested privacy, prayers, and calm from members of the public.

“The family will appreciate prayers, privacy, and calm during this incredibly difficult moment. We thank you,” Namwamba added.

This comes months after Namwamba lost his longtime bodyguard, Corporal Jonah Kemboi Rotich, who passed away after a prolonged battle with illness.

In a statement on May 25, Namwamba described Rotich not just as a security aide, but as a brother, friend, and integral part of his family.

"For eighteen years, Corporal Jonah Kemboi Rotich has been more than just a trusted security aide to me. He has been a cherished brother and a true friend. Family in every sense. Professional yet humane, humble yet firm, loyal and honest beyond a morsel of doubt, he has been an ever presence around me in all situations,” the former CS stated.
