Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced the suspension of 40 health facilities by the Social Health Authority (SHA) over engaging in fraudulent activities.
Addressing the media on Friday, August 8, CS Duale said the list of the health facilities suspended by SHA will be published in a Gazette Notice.
“In accordance with the powers conferred by section 48 subsection 6 of the Social Health Act, the Social Health Authority has suspended a total of 40 health facilities found to have engaged in criminal activities.
“They have engaged in corruption and theft of public resources. The suspension is effective immediately,” Duale stated.
The Health CS noted that during the suspension, the 40 facilities will not be entitled to receive any benefit from SHA.

Duale also said the Ministry of Health will surcharge the facilities to return money paid to them over the fraudulent claims.
“During the period of the investigation, these facilities are not entitled to receive any benefits from the Social Health Authority. We will be surcharging them to recover any money already paid to them on the basis of these fraudulent claims.
Duale mentioned that some hospitals deliberately submitted claims for more expensive procedures than those performed.
“For example, a facility in Nairobi lodged a claim for a more expensive procedure which was worth Ksh201,600 after having only performed a process worth Ksh89,600, in essence claiming more than Ksh112,000 from what was correctly due,” said Duale.
CS Duale also disclosed that some health facilities, particularly in Nairobi and Homa Bay, were fraudulently converting outpatient cases into inpatient ones.
Furthermore, the Health CS flagged cases of hospital billing for patients already admitted in other facilities.
