President William Ruto on Tuesday, September 2, hosted grassroots leaders from Turkana County at State House, Nairobi, where he outlined ambitious development plans worth billions of shillings aimed at transforming the region's infrastructure and economic prospects.
In his statement, Ruto noted that Turkana County's progress has been held back for far too long, leaving it to lag behind other regions of the nation.
"For far too long, Turkana County's progress has been held back, leaving it to lag behind other regions of our nation. That is why we are transforming Turkana's infrastructure, starting with the overhaul of the Maili Tisa–Kitale–Kainuk–Lokichar Road, a lifeline that will connect the County to greater opportunities and markets," President Ruto stated.
The President unveiled several flagship projects that will revolutionize Turkana's development trajectory.

Key among these is the Ksh2.3 billion rural electrification project, which will power Turkana's future and connect remote areas to the national grid.
Infrastructure development will also see the construction of a modern Ksh900 million stadium in Lodwar, which will provide the county with world-class sporting facilities.
Additionally, the government will expand the Turkwel Irrigation Scheme with a KSh2.5 billion investment, putting more than 100,000 acres of land under productive cultivation and significantly boosting agricultural productivity in the arid region.
Two modern fish markets worth Ksh700 million will benefit the fishing industry, which is crucial to communities around Lake Turkana.
President Ruto announced plans to upgrade and equip Lodwar County Referral Hospital in the health sector, ensuring residents have access to quality healthcare services closer to home.
The education sector will see the construction of hostels worth KSh2.3 billion for university and college students in the region.
“Engaged grassroots leaders from Turkana County and challenged them to accelerate SHA registration in the area to guarantee affordable and quality healthcare for every household,” Ruto stated.
In recent times, the president has hosted grassroots leaders from various counties at the State House in an effort to track development needs and projects across the country.
On August 29, President Ruto met with Meru County grassroots leaders at the State House to discuss key infrastructure projects, including upgrading roads, constructing modern markets, and transforming Meru Town into a city.
The meeting focused on securing sustainable markets for miraa and other agricultural products vital to the county's economy.
On August 27, the President hosted grassroots leaders from Kiambu County, where he reported on the government's three-year progress and outlined ambitious plans for the region.
He announced the largest market development in Kenya's history, including 30 modern markets in Kiambu County alone, worth Ksh4.5 billion. The county is also set to benefit from 15,000 housing units, worth Ksh30 billion.
Other infrastructure projects discussed for Kiambu included a new 10,000-seater stadium in Thika town, completion of the 240km Mau Mau roads in the Kiambu section, and dual carriageway construction connecting the Muthiga-Ndumberi road at Ksh22 billion and the Northern Bypass for which Ksh20 billion has been allocated.
