Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has issued an official statement following the tragic drowning of a tourist at its Olkaria Geothermal Spa facility over the weekend.
In a statement released on Tuesday, September 9, KenGen confirmed that a local tourist collapsed while enjoying the facility at the Olkaria Geothermal Spa on Sunday afternoon, September 7, 2025.
According to the company's holding statement, the visitor was enjoying the facility when the incident occurred.
KenGen's response team acted immediately, providing first aid and advanced life support before transferring the individual to Naivasha Level IV Hospital using one of the company's ambulances that was on standby at the spa.
"Despite all emergency efforts, both on-site and at the hospital, the visitor was sadly pronounced deceased while receiving treatment," the statement read.

The Naivasha Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Isaac Kiama confirmed the drowning and revealed that an inquest file has been opened to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
"We have opened an inquest file and recorded statements from KenGen officials as well as some of the friends who were present at the spa," Kiama stated, indicating that authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
A post-mortem examination conducted on the victim's body revealed that the individual had lost consciousness while in the pool and subsequently inhaled a considerable amount of water, leading to the fatal drowning.
KenGen has extended its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the tragic incident. The company emphasized that it shares in their grief and stands ready to offer every possible support during this difficult period.
