Babu Owino has clarified that a viral photo of him with President William Ruto’s son Nick Ruto was taken in 2018.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has broken silence over a viral photo of him and President William Ruto’s son Nick Ruto at a nightclub.

In a statement on Sunday, September 14, Babu clarified that the photo with the President’s son was not recent.

The Embakasi East lawmaker explained that the viral photo with Nick was taken in 2018.

Babu noted that he has been sober for five years, with his last alcohol drink taken on January 17, 2020.

“Let me clarify this for the record. The last time I drank alcohol was on the 17th January 2020. The photo below was taken in 2018. I have been sober for the past 5 years. I will transform the lives of Nairobians and Kenyans the way I transformed my Life,” said Babu.

The clarification follows questions from a section of social media users who wondered why Babu, a vocal critic of President Ruto, was seen spending time with his son.

This also comes at a time when the Embakasi East MP’s future in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) remains uncertain.

On August 29, Babu stated that he does not need a party to run for political office, saying his personal brand is bigger than most parties in Kenya.

"The name Babu Owino isn't it bigger than almost 100% of the political parties in this country? So, Babu Owino alone is a political party; Babu Owino can be elected without a party," he said.

The ODM lawmaker is currently part of the Kenya Moja political faction, which is made up of youthful MPs and positioning itself as the alternative to other political camps.

The group also consists of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, Kitutu Chache MP Antony Kibagendi, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, and Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo.

“We already have about 70 members who want to join this group. Some are already in, while others are sending us messages saying they want to become members,” Babu said on September 4.
