KANU has confirmed that its National Chairman, Gideon Moi, will be on the ballot in the forthcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election.

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) has confirmed that its National Chairman, Gideon Moi, will be on the ballot in the forthcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election.

In a statement on Thursday, October 2, the party revealed that Moi had been nominated after wide-ranging consultations both within the party and with the people of Baringo.

"The Kenya African National Union (KANU) wishes to formally announce that, following extensive consultations, deliberations, and consensus within the party and with the people of Baringo, our National Chairman, Hon. Gideon Moi, has been nominated as the party's candidate for the forthcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election," the statement read.

KANU further said that Moi had accepted the nomination, noting his gratitude to the party faithful and the wider Baringo community.

"In accepting this call to serve, Hon. Moi has expressed profound gratitude to KANU members, supporters, and the people of Baringo for their patience, confidence, and steadfast support," the statement added.

According to KANU, Moi intends to center his campaign on inclusive leadership and transparent governance, pledging to run a campaign rooted in service to the people.

"He remains committed to running a people-driven campaign anchored on inclusivity, accountability, and service to all. Therefore, as a party, we are confident that Hon. Gideon Moi's candidature will resonate widely with the electorate," the statement further read.

In conclusion, KANU urged supporters from Baringo and beyond to stand firmly with Moi as he seeks a return to the Senate.

"We call upon our supporters across Baringo County and the country at large to rally behind our Chairman as we embark on this crucial journey," the statement concluded.

Moi officially joined active politics in 2002, successfully contesting the Baringo Central parliamentary seat, which had previously been held by his father, Daniel Arap Moi.

He served as a Member of Parliament from 2003 to 2007, marking his formal entry into national politics.

Over the years, Moi rose through the ranks of KANU, first serving as Vice-Chairman before being elected Chairman in April 2012, succeeding Uhuru Kenyatta.

In the 2013 general elections, Moi was elected Senator for Baringo County, a position he retained after the 2017 elections.

Ahead of the 2022 elections, Moi briefly considered running for the presidency.

However, he later aligned KANU with the Azimio One Kenya Alliance led by Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta, shelving his presidential ambitions.

Despite his national profile, he lost the Baringo senatorial race in 2022 to William Cheptumo of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In the November 27 by-election, Moi will face off with Vincent Kiprono Chemitei who won the UDA nomination for the upcoming Senate by-election,

Cheburet garnered 48,791 votes, defeating eight other contenders in the nomination exercise held earlier this week.

His closest rival, Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, managed 30,897 votes, while Daniel Kiptoo Korir came third with 23,613.

"Mr Kiprono Cheburet garnered 48,791 votes in the UDA party nomination contest to clinch the party ticket for the November 27 Baringo Senatorial by-election," UDA said in a statement.
