The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed that several passengers of the 33-seater bus that plunged into a river in Wakuru are receiving treatment at the facility.

In a statement on Wednesday, October 8, KNH said the passengers sustained multiple injuries in the accident. 

The hospital said the medical team is working around the clock to ensure the victims receive critical care and support.

“A number of patients were received at KNH yesterday following a tragic road traffic accident involving a 33-seater bus that veered off the road and plunged into a river in Wakuru. The incident resulted in multiple injuries, and the injured are currently receiving medical care at KNH

“Our medical team responded to the emergency and has been working around the clock to provide critical care and support the affected passengers. KNH remains fully committed to ensuring those injured receive the highest standard of treatment and support during this difficult time,” KNH stated.

KNH CEO Richard Lesiyampe, who was present during the emergency response, expressed gratitude to all emergency responders, medical personnel, and support staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the victims received appropriate care.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unfortunate incident. We wish the injured a full and speedy recovery,” the hospital added.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, October 7, evening at Musa Gitau Road in Waruku, off Waiyaki Way.

Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, in a statement, said he received a distress call following the accident and was requested to dispatch county ambulances to help the injured passengers.

“The caller requested my help in dispatching county ambulances, as the situation was dire. Our County Emergency Ambulance team responded immediately, and I also visited the scene personally. It was a heartbreaking,” Mosiria stated.

Photos of the accident seen by Nairobileo.co.ke showed emergency responders and locals helping the injured passengers off the vehicle.

At least 30 passengers who were in the bus sustained injuries in the tragic accident.
