2 Kenyans Arrested in Tanzania Freed

Two Kenyan nationals who were arrested following the protests in Tanzania have been released.

In a statement on Saturday, November 8, the Kenyan High Commission in Tanzania said the two, Fredrick Lorent Obuya and John Gitahi, were released without charges.

Kenyan High Commissioner to Tanzania, Isaac Njenga, noted that the duo was released following efforts by the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs through the Kenya High Commission in Tanzania.

“The High Commissioner, H.E. Ambassador Isaac Njenga, received two Kenyans who had been arrested in Tanzania following the protests of 29th October 2025 during the General Elections.

“Mr. Fredrick Lorent Obuya, a lawyer and tour operator, and Mr. John Gitahi Nderitu, a financial professional, were released without charges to the custody of the Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam. They thanked the Mission and looked forward to reuniting with their families,” the Commission stated.

Obuya was arrested by the Tanzanian security officers in Dar es Salaam on October 31, 2025.

The businessman was traveling to Zanzibar on a work-related trip when he was taken into custody at the Oyster Bay Police Station in Dar es Salaam.

The arrest sparked outrage online, with Kenyans and human rights organizations demanding his release.

This comes after Human rights activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, who went missing in Uganda, were released.

Njagi and Oyoo were arrested in October during the campaign of presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine.

The duo was released on Friday and handed over to Kenya's High Commissioner in Uganda, who facilitated their travel to Busia, where they were received by County Commissioner Chaunga Mwachaunga.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’Oei, commended the Kenyan mission in Kampala for their dedication to tracing the missing individuals.

PS Sing’Oei also assured the public that a comprehensive update on the case would be provided.

“Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo are free and on Kenyan territory. Late last night, after lengthy engagements, the two were released to our High Commissioner in Uganda, Joash Maangi.

"They were escorted by the Ambassador and officials of the Uganda government to Busia border town and were received by Busia County Commissioner, Chaunga Mwachaunga,” he stated.
