Kibaki's body is expected to arrive in Othaya at 10 am

The body of the late former President Mwai Kibaki has already left Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi for his Othaya home.

The procession escorting Kibaki's body left Lee at exactly 7 am on Saturday morning and is expected to make its way to Othaya Approved school in Nyeri county at exactly 10 am.

Kibaki's remains were wrapped in a national flag and loaded in a hearse carriage. It was escorted by military officers in a presidential-like procession. The procession was also joined by a section of Kibaki's family.

Traffic along the busy Thika Super Highway was interrupted for some minutes as the procession snakes its way through a highway largely connected with the late head of state.

Curious Kenyans lined up along the highway and could be seen waving at Kibaki's procession as one way of paying their last respect to the man who greatly impacted the country's economic growth.

According to reports, Kibaki's body will later be loaded into a gun carriage about 400 metres to the burial service venue.

Among the leaders expected in Othay for the final rites include President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto, Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka among many other dignitaries from across the country.

Members of the public have already started streaming into the venue where the final service will take place. A total of 15,000 mourners are expected to attend the service.

Kibaki will later be expected to be laid to rest at his Othaya home in a function that will only be attended by a few leaders and close family members.
