Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has weighed in on the re-opening of schools amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that the government is confident in the measures instituted by the Ministry of Education under the leadership of Prof George Magoha.
Speaking during an interview on Monday night, CS Kagwe appeared to suggest that schools will re-open as planned, citing that the government has conducted a massive vaccination exercise among teachers.
According to Kagwe, teachers and other school workers are the main threat in schools, and having been vaccinated, the threat will be reduced significantly.

“Today in the meeting we were briefed well by CS Magoha and we are confident that they are taking sufficient steps at the moment and pacing it in such a manner that we can observe the happenings.
“…Don’t forget we have carried out vaccination on teachers, the main threat when it comes to schools is not so much the students… The issue is the school workers and teachers. We have carried out vaccination on teachers and we are confident that we can still manage the pandemic,” he said.
The CS re-affirmed the government’s position on the protection of students at schools, noting that the Corona situation is being reviewed daily, and should any new trends emerge, the government will make decisions accordingly.
He maintained that the safety of students is paramount, adding that any decisions made in regards to schools will be anchored on the safety of pupils.
“It is a fluid situation and decisions will be made as we watch them and evolve them…There is no way we are going to risk the lives of our children at any given time,” he said.
Schools across the country are set to re-open on May 10, 2021, after closing to allow candidates to sit their national exams.
