Several students from the Technical University of Mombasa are feared dead after the bus they were travelling in overturned along the Nairobi-Kisumu Highway.

The accident occurred on Friday, August 8, along the stretch between Awasi and Ahero. 

Images at the scene show the bus on its left-hand side on the road reserve, with several windows shuttered on impact. Eyewitnesses claim that some students were trapped under the wreckage.

Siaya Governor James Orengo revealed that the students were travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu to pay their last respects to former student leader Elvis Otieno.

Orengo confirmed the fatalities and offered condolences to the families of the TUM students who lost their lives in the road accident.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of several university students along the Awasi–Ahero highway. A journey of solidarity that ended in unimaginable grief.

"To the grieving families, friends, and the entire TUM comrade fraternity: my thoughts and prayers are with you during this dark hour. May God grant you strength, and may their young souls rest in eternal power," Orengo wrote.

Several students also sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities where they received urgent medical attention.

Otieno was the former President of the TUM students' council. He passed away after he fell when he suffered an epileptic attack.

His death has triggered an outpouring of grief from leaders, who remembered him as a passionate youth leader, community mobiliser and influential student leader. 

In a statement on Monday, July 20, Public Service Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo described Elvis as a close friend whose commitment to empowering young people inspired many people who knew him.

Omollo said Elvis, who was fondly known as the 'Beast', dedicated his time and energy to creating platforms that brought young people together for dialogue, mentorship, and positive engagement.

On his part, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino described Elvis' death as a painful loss that had left him devastated. He said Elvis was more than a friend, describing him as a blessing and a source of joy to those who knew him.
