The redevelopment of Thika Stadium is progressing, with the project expected to be completed before December 2026.
In an update issued on Tuesday, August 11, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo noted that the project, being undertaken by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), is set to transform the facility into a 10,000-seater international-standard stadium with facilities for football, athletics and other sporting activities.
Omollo said the redevelopment is part of efforts to improve sports infrastructure and create more opportunities for Kenya's young athletes.
"Investing in modern sports infrastructure is essential to unlocking the immense potential of Kenya's youthful talent and sustaining the country's growing stature as a global sporting powerhouse," he stated.

Once complete, the stadium will feature a FIFA-standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, modern changing rooms and high-intensity floodlights.
The facility will also include a basketball court and a swimming pool, expanding the range of sporting activities that can be hosted at the venue.
According to Omollo, the project is also providing employment opportunities and supporting businesses involved in the supply of construction materials and services.
"The project is already creating employment for hundreds of young people, supporting local businesses through the procurement of construction materials and services," he added.
The redevelopment is expected to provide a venue for grassroots talent development and regional sporting competitions, giving athletes in Thika and surrounding areas access to improved training and competition facilities.
The project is part of the government's wider efforts to upgrade sporting facilities across the country, including the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.
In a previous update, Omollo said the Eldoret stadium was being upgraded as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the facility expected to serve as a training base and alternative match venue.
"Construction has advanced significantly, with major structural works, roofing, seating terraces and supporting facilities progressing towards completion. The project is also creating jobs and stimulating business activities across Eldoret and the wider North Rift region," he noted.
The Kipchoge Keino Stadium is being upgraded to a 15,000-seat facility with Confederation of African Football (CAF)-compliant infrastructure, including floodlights, modern media facilities and international-standard changing rooms.
