Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has issued an update on the ongoing expansion of Kenneth Matiba Hospital in Murang'a County.
In a statement on Thursday, August 13, PS Omollo said the hospital is being upgraded from a 20-bed facility to a modern 100-bed Level 4 referral hospital.
Omollo noted that the facility will be equipped with a trauma centre, doctors' plaza, specialized clinics and expanded inpatient wards.
“The upgrade will expand the hospital from a 20-bed facility to a modern 100-bed Level 4 referral hospital, complete with a trauma centre, doctors' plaza, specialised clinics and expanded inpatient wards,” read the statement in part.

The project, implemented by the national government, is being constructed under the direct supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
According to PS Omollo, the Kenneth Matiba Hospital will operate round the clock once completed.
“The hospital will operate round the clock, providing comprehensive specialised healthcare and easing pressure on neighbouring referral facilities,” PS Omollo said.
Further, the Interior PS said the expansion of the facility demonstrates the government’s commitment to advancing Universal Health Coverage while honoring the enduring legacy of Kenneth Matiba.
“The ongoing expansion of Kenneth Matiba Hospital demonstrates this commitment while honouring the enduring legacy of Kenneth Matiba, whose profound sacrifices for Kenya's democracy and visionary public leadership continue to inspire the nation,” PS Omollo added.
This comes days after Omollo gave an update on the construction of the 350-bed Githunguri Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County.
In a statement on Sunday, August 9, PS Omollo said the main hospital structure has been completed, with auxiliary works now underway.
He noted that the ongoing works include the completion of kitchen facilities and cabro paving ahead of the hospital's commissioning.
“Delivered through a partnership between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defence, with Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers spearheading construction, the project's main hospital structure is complete, while auxiliary works, including the kitchen facilities and cabro paving, are in progress ahead of commissioning,” read the statement in part.
The Interior PS observed that the facility will ease pressure on Kiambu and Thika Level 5 hospitals once operational.
PS Omollo further said the facility will offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency and critical care, oncology, orthopedics, mental health services and enhanced maternal and child healthcare.
