The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation has announced an internship programme targeting young graduates.

In a notice on Tuesday, September 1, the ministry said the programme will be implemented under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HOAGW4RP), which is funded by the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank. 

The initiative will provide opportunities for qualified graduates to gain hands-on experience while supporting groundwater management activities in Kenya.

The ministry said the internship programme will be supported through funding secured for the project and will contribute to strengthening groundwater institutions and improving access to groundwater in the Horn of Africa borderlands.

"The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation intends to deploy part of this funding to support Internship Programme for the Financial Year 2026/2027. The Project Development Objective (PDO) of the HOAGW4RP is to enhance accessibility and promote sustainable management of groundwater in the Horn of Africa borderlands," the notice read.

According to the Ministry of Water, the programme is open to young graduates aged between 25 and 35 who hold relevant bachelor's degrees from recognised institutions of higher education.

Applicants must have graduated no more than two years before the date of the advertisement. 

They must also not have benefited from another internship programme funded by the Government of Kenya and must not have had formal employment in their areas of specialisation after graduation.

The eligible fields include geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, natural resources management, civil engineering with a water option, sociology and gender development studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS), ICT and communication, data science, chemistry, hydrometeorology or climate analysis, hydrology, economics, finance and other water-related engineering courses.

The programme will be coordinated by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and managed by the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW).

Interns will be deployed to different agencies and counties implementing the HOAGW4RP, where they will have an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and gain practical experience. 

They may also participate in field assignments linked to project activities in the five counties targeted by the project.

Successful applicants will be expected to undertake tasks assigned by their supervisors or mentors, document skills gained during the programme and participate in mentorship activities.

They will also be required to comply with quarterly monitoring and evaluation requirements, follow the rules and regulations of their respective public institutions and make an effort to develop relevant skills in their areas of specialisation.

Interns must maintain confidentiality of information and ensure the security of tools and equipment entrusted to them. 

They will also be required to obtain clearance from the relevant authority before leaving their internship stations.

According to the ministry, the internship will run for 12 months and will be non-renewable. 

The second cohort, comprising 65 interns, is scheduled to begin in January 2027, during the third quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year.

Interns will receive a monthly stipend in accordance with the applicable government guidelines, policies and circulars governing the Public Service Internship Programme.

Those who successfully complete the programme will be issued with certificates.

However, an internship may be discontinued on grounds including gross or disorderly conduct, unsatisfactory performance or commission of a criminal offence.

An intern wishing to terminate the arrangement may do so by giving one month's notice or submitting a written resignation or termination letter to the head of the public institution through their supervisor. 

They may also give two weeks' notice before the expiry of the agreed internship period.

Interested graduates are required to submit the official internship programme application form, cover letter, copy of their identification card, CV, relevant certificates and other supporting documents via email.

Applications should be sent to [email protected] using the subject heading "Application For The HOAGW4RP Internship 2027".

Those selected will be required to provide proof of a valid Personal Accident Insurance Cover for the internship period, a Certificate of Good Conduct, copies of their KRA PIN Certificate and bank account details.

The ministry has set September 18, 2026, as the deadline for applications.

Selection will be based on the applicants' merits and performance during interviews. 

The Ministry has also encouraged women and persons living with disabilities to apply, noting that the programme will provide equal opportunities to graduates.

Elsewhere, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced 1,631 promotional vacancies for serving teachers.

In a notice on Tuesday, September 1, the commission invited qualified teachers to apply for the vacancies. 

The promotional vacancies include Deputy Principal III - Regular (132), Senior Master II (29) and Deputy Headteacher II - Regular (1,470). 

According to TSC, successful teachers will be posted to institutions where vacancies exist.

Interested candidates are required to submit their applications through the online TSC portal at www.teachersonline.go.ke. 

The deadline for submitting the applications is on Monday, September 14, 2026, at midnight. The commission emphasized that only applications submitted online will be considered. 

"Only applications submitted through the online portal will be considered. Manual applications will not be accepted," the commission stated. 

The commission also said teachers who applied for the same positions during the earlier advertisement should not reapply. 

"Candidates who applied for these posts under the earlier advertisement and successfully submitted their applications need not reapply," TSC added.
