Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been summoned by a Senate committee over the country's preparedness in the 2022 General Elections.

The Senate Committee on National Security and Defence also asked Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Dr Karanja Kibicho to appear before it.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti will also be summoned by the Senate Committee.

“It’s only 10 months before the 2022 General Election. From all indications, it looks like it is a hot seat,” a statement by Cherargei reads in part," Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei said.

“What measures are we putting in place to ensure that there is no loss of life and no Post-Election Violence (PEV) will be witnessed again?” “Is the IEBC ready to do its job? Are the security agencies prepared so that they do not make the mistakes that have been made in the previous elections and by-elections,” he added.

They will be expected to explain the security of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials while conducting future elections.

The committee issued the summons over chaos and violent experience during recent by-elections in several parts of the country, Politicians and their supporters were reported to have caused chaos during the Juja, Bonchari, Matungu and Kabuchai constituencies by-elections.

In addition voters in Rurii Ward and London wards also experienced chaos during the campaigns and voting days.

“We do not want to witness any chaos in Kiambaa, Juja, or Bonchari where people are misusing government machinery to stifle other candidates from participating,” Senator Cherargei stated.
