Nairobi Water Announces 26-Hour Supply Interruption in Parts of Nairobi

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has announced water supply interruptions affecting several parts of Nairobi.

In a notice on Thursday, September 10, the company said the interruption will result from a scheduled shutdown of the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant.

"The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Ltd wishes to inform the public of a scheduled shutdown of the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant to facilitate emergency repair works along the Sasumua-Kabete pipeline," the notice read.

According to Nairobi Water, the shutdown will begin on Friday, September 11, at 6:00 a.m. and is scheduled to run until Saturday, September 12, at 8:00 a.m., lasting approximately 26 hours.

The company advised residents and institutions in the affected areas to make preparations before the shutdown begins.

"Customers are strongly advised to store adequate water in advance and use available supplies sparingly," the notice added.

The affected areas include Westlands and Lavington, covering Riverside Drive, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Ndume Road, King’ara Road, Riara Road and surrounding areas.

In Kileleshwa, the interruption will affect Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mbooni Road, Othaya Road, Kaputei, Laikipia Road, Githunguri, DoD, St. George’s School, Tembere Road and surrounding areas.

The University of Nairobi main campus, customers along Mamlaka Line and Valley Road will also be affected.

In Kilimani and Hurlingham, affected areas include Argwings Kodhek Road from Chaka Road to Hurlingham, Hurlingham Shopping Centre and surrounding areas, Mtito Andei Road, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Lower George Padmore Road, Daystar University, Denis Pritt Road and Coptic Hospital.

The interruption will also affect Upper Hill, including Matumbato, Kiambare and Masaba areas, Mawenzi Road, parts of Hospital Road, Kenya Road, Elgon Road, Kenyatta National Hospital and KEMRI Flats along Mbagathi Way.

In Dagoretti, Kawangware and Waithaka, affected areas include Lower Gitanga Road, parts of Kawangware, Sunset Estate, Sohill City Estates, Kagira, Kagondo, Muhuri Road, Upper Kabiria, Mithonge, Kamwanya, Kahuho Road, Ngina Road, Kikuyu Road, Waithaka, Ndwaru Road, Upper Waithaka, Gachui, Kirigo, Dagoretti Market and Mariguini.

Uthiru, Mutuini and Gatina will also experience the interruption, affecting Uthiru Muthua area, Muchugia Road, Mutego, Mutuini and surrounding areas, as well as Gatina and its environs.

Other affected areas include Jamhuri, Kabarnet and the Kenyatta Market vicinity, covering Bishop Magua, Kabarnet Road, parts of Joseph Kang’ethe Road, Muchai Drive from Ngong Road to Mbaruk Road, Jamhuri Estate, Upper Hill areas, KNH, KEMRI Offices, Highview 1 and 2, Kenyatta Market and surrounding areas.

In Kibera, the affected areas include Makina, Karanja Road and surrounding areas, Fort Jesus, Olympic, Kibera Kianda, parts of Gatwekera, parts of Ayany, Kibera Mwembeni, Makongeni environs, Kwa DC, Lindi, KEMRI Flats along Mbagathi Way and Highrise Estate.

The shutdown will also affect Kinoo Road at the Joseph Kang’ethe Junction, Togo Flats and Kang’ethe Greens Upper Flats.

In Langata, Nairobi West and Madaraka, affected locations include Langata Barracks, Sunvalley 1 and 2, Royal Park, Dog Unit, KMA, St. Mary’s and surrounding areas, Madaraka, Hima Gardens and Siwaka, Funguo Estate, Akila 2 and environs, Rangers Court, Leeban B and Nairobi West Shopping Centre.

Residents in Karen and surrounding areas will also be affected. 

These include Bogani East Road, Muiri Lane, Forest Edge, Mukinduri Road, Muricho Road, Mukoma Road, Kisembe East, Magadi Road, Ndorobo Road, Kikeni Road, Ndovu Road, Kifaru Road, Tandara Road, Mutamaiyo, Mundenderu Road, Kikeni Close, Korongo Road, Swara Lodge environs, Quere Lane, and Langata South Road.

Others are Mukoyeti West and East, Mukoyeti Road, May East, Dalat, Royale, Kuwinda Road, Kufuga Road, Koitobos, Twiga Hill, Ushirika, Masai West, Hardy, Milima, Simba Hill, Giraffe Centre, Tumbili, Macushla, Bogani Road, Nzohe, Kasuku, Kwarara, Silanga Road, Kumbe Road, Comboni and Mbagathi Ridge.

The Central Business District, areas along Mombasa Road, South B and South C estates, including Mater Hospital, will also be affected. 

The list further includes Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, SGR, Athi River Export Processing Zone, Coca-Cola, Mukuru, Imara Daima, estates and industries along North Airport Road, Embakasi Village, Tassia Estate and MAVWASCo.

In the Ngara, Gigiri and diplomatic areas, the affected locations include Ngara, Forest Road, Desai Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, Muranga Road, Park Road, Gigiri, Whispers Avenue, Village Market, UNEP and the US Embassy.

Eastlands areas including Eastleigh, Maringo, Buruburu Phases 3 and 4, Gikomba, Pumwani, Majengo, Shauri Moyo, Jericho, Jerusalem and Kimathi will also experience the interruption.

The company also listed Mathare, Huruma and the Outer Ring corridor among the affected areas. 

These include Mathare North, GSU, Rafiki, Utalii College, KPLC Training School, Traffic Headquarters, Mathari Hospital, Mlango Kubwa, Juja Road, Huruma, Ngei I and II, Kosovo, Racecourse, Ushirika, parts of Ngumba Estate, Old Muthaiga Road, parts of Thome, Survey, Safari Park Hotel, Kenya Breweries and parts of Baba Dogo light industries.

The entire Industrial Area, including Masai Road and adjacent areas, will also be affected by the shutdown.

Nairobi Water said the repairs were necessary to restore and maintain the water supply system, asking affected customers to cooperate as the works are undertaken.

"We appeal to all affected customers for their understanding and cooperation as we undertake these essential emergency repairs. Every effort will be made to restore supply as quickly and safely as possible," the notice concluded.
