Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua has promised that the government that will take over from President William Ruto will not harass the church.

Speaking during a meeting with clergymen in Portland, USA, Gachagua said that the next government would prioritise the protection of the freedom of worship.

He vowed that the church would not be interfered with, but would instead be consulted by those who will have the reins of power.

"My assurance to the clergy is that the new government to be formed in the next 332 days will prioritise protecting and preserving the freedom of worship, ensuring there will be no interference with the church of God.

"Our new government will also work very closely with the church for guidance, recognizing that the church is an integral part of our society and a vital partner in nation-building," Gachagua stated.

The former Deputy President made the declaration after members of the clergy in Portland expressed concern over the alleged harassment of the church in Kenya.

He further revealed that the clergymen had intimated to him their concerns about the country's economic state and the rising cost of living, which affected the common mwananchi.

Earlier, Gachagua was in Spokane, Washington, where he engaged with Kenyan expatriates over dinner. He promised them that under his watch, the taxpayers' money and the country's resources would be managed well.

The DCP boss left Kenya for the United States of America on August 26, for a 50-day extended tour. He spent the first 10 days privately with his wife, Pastor Dorcas.

Gachagua explained that the purpose of the trip is to meet Kenyans in the USA to discuss economic development, national affairs, and the future of the country ahead of the upcoming election.

The ex-DP has tasked Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala and John Methu with leading the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) engagements while he is away.
