Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that there is a plot to arrest Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji following the violent clashes witnessed during a UDA meeting in Nembure, Embu County.

In a statement on Sunday, September 13, Gachagua alleged that several police officers had surrounded Mukunji’s home with orders to arrest him over the chaos. 

The DCP Party leader accused Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire of being behind the plan to arrest Mukunji. 

“The harassment of Hon. Gitonga Mukunji by Kithure Kindiki and Cecily Mbarire is unacceptable.

“Hundreds of policemen are surrounding his Embu home with orders to arrest him for the violent clashes between citizens and police yesterday in Embu,” Gachagua claimed.

The former DP also claimed that Kindiki had sent Mukunji a message on WhatsApp threatening to deal with him following the incident.

“Following the incident, Mr. Kindiki sent Hon Mukunji a WhatsApp message threatening to deal with him. Mr. Kithure Kindiki wants to use police to frame Hon. Mukunji as having sent goons to disrupt the meeting,” he alleged.  

Further, Gachagua said he has mobilized lawyers to defend the Manyatta lawmaker if he is apprehended by the police. 

“I want to assure DCP supporters that I have mobilized our lawyers to defend Hon. Mukunji once arrested in church, where he will attend,” he added. 

Gachagua urged Mukunji to remain strong and resist what he described as intimidation from the government.  

This comes after the National Police Service (NPS) launched investigations into the violence witnessed during the UDA meeting in Nembure, Embu County.

 NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the incident occurred after a group of individuals allegedly attempted to storm the UDA meeting, which was presided over by DP Kindiki. 

Nyaga noted that police officers responded promptly and repulsed the group, with several suspects being arrested at the scene. 

“Upon the group's unlawful attempt to breach the meeting, officers acted decisively and repulsed the assailants. Several suspects were arrested at the scene, and law and order was swiftly restored,” Nyaga stated. 

However, one person died during the violence while several others sustained injuries. Six vehicles were also torched during the incident. 

Nyaga said investigations have commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. 

“Investigations have commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident, and no effort will be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all persons involved,” the NPS Spokesperson said. 

Nyaga warned that anyone who will be found to have participated in the incident or similar acts of lawlessness would face legal action.
