Governor Ole Lenku Hints at Running for Senate Seat in 2027

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has hinted at the possibility of vying for the Kajiado Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Sunday, September 13, Governor Lenku said the Maasai Community is pushing him to remain in politics even after serving as Kajiado Governor for two terms. 

Governor Lenku noted that his political future would largely be determined by the Maasai community. 

“My community, the Maa nation, has been very gracious to me. When Ntimama passed on in 2016, in very short succession we lost John Keen and Nkaissery, and our community was rattled. A council of council sat and said we need a vice for our community, and I was picked as the Maa spokesperson. 

“My next course of politics has more or less been decided by the community; having been their voice, I cannot retire from politics. They are pushing me towards the Senate. And so that is cooking; we will keep to have that conversation as we go on,” he stated. 

The Kajiado Governor also maintained that the decision is not about his personal ambitions but about the collective interests of the Maasai community

“It is not about me wanting or not wanting; it is about our collective position, where will we get our voice from,” Governor Lenku added. 

His remarks come weeks after he threatened to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), citing betrayal from the party leadership. 

Speaking on Saturday, August 22, Lenku accused some ODM party officials of campaigning for State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito, yet his deputy Martin Moshisho is seeking the seat. 

The Kajiado Governor demanded an apology from ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga over the incident. 

“I am an ODM Governor, and my deputy, Martin Moshisho, is seeking the Governor’s seat through the same party. But about a month ago, we saw officials from our party coming to campaign for someone who is not an ODM member in Kajiado, Katoo Ole Metito.

“We want to tell the party leader, Oburu Oginga, that we are still waiting for an apology and for those who made the mistake to come out and say they are sorry,” he said. 

Lenku warned that the ODM party will be shut down in Kajiado if they allow officials to continue supporting Metito. 

“Recently, you saw 10 MCAs leave UDA and ODM and join DCP because of Katoo’s poor leadership. If ODM continues to allow opportunists to chase Katoo’s money, ODM will be finished in Kajiado,” he warned.
