Several people are feared dead after a matatu collided head-on with a trailer along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The gruesome accident occurred on Wednesday night, September 16, at Kapiti Plains in Machakos County.
The 14-seater matatu belonging to Kinatwa Sacco was travelling from Nairobi towards Mombasa when it collided with the trailer
Preliminary reports indicate that at least five people died on the spot while several others sustained injuries.
The injured passengers were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital for medical attention.

In a separate incident, four people were killed after a lorry lost control and rammed into pedestrians in Kisii Town.
The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday evening near Chomachoma along the Kisii CBD- Daraja Mbili road.
Several victims sustained injuries and were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.
This comes days after five people were killed in a road accident at Kikopey along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
The accident occurred on Sunday night, September 13, at around 11 pm and involved an Easy Coach bus and a Toyota IST.
The bus was travelling from Gilgil towards Nakuru when it was involved in the accident.
Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio confirmed the accident, saying police had launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
Four of those who died were occupants of the private vehicle and included two female adults and two juveniles. They died at the scene of the accident following the collision.
The driver of the Toyota IST sustained serious injuries and was taken to Gilgil Hospital for treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
Other passengers who were injured in the crash were also rushed to hospital, where they were receiving treatment.
