Police Officers from Garissa Police Station have arrested a suspected M-Pesa fraudster who has allegedly been swindling M-Pesa shop attendants in Garissa town and surrounding areas.

In a statement on Friday, September 18, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, Edwin Mugoi, was arrested after he allegedly defrauded an M-Pesa attendant in the Posta area of Bulla Hodhan.  

According to the DCI, the suspect posed as a Safaricom agent and approached the attendant under the pretext of upgrading the phone line. 

“The incident unfolded when an M-Pesa shop attendant in the Posta Area in Bulla Hodhan fell victim to the cunning tactics of Edwin Mugoi, who posed as a Safaricom agent. 

“With deception at his fingertips, Mugoi approached the unsuspecting attendant, pretending to offer a line upgrade,” read the statement.

Mugoi then allegedly swapped the attendant’s line and fraudulently transferred money to another account.

The police responded swiftly and arrested Mugoi shortly after the incident.

Following the arrest, the officers conducted a thorough search and recovered multiple SIM cards, four mobile phones, two SIM card registration gadgets, and four chargers from the suspect. 

“Officers conducted a thorough search and recovered multiple SIM cards, four mobile phones, two SIM card registration gadgets, and four chargers, all tools of his trade,” DCI added. 

Mugoi is currently behind bars, as he undergoes processing ahead of his arraignment in court.

This comes a day after DCI detectives busted a phone theft and hacking racket in Kisii town. 

In a statement on Thursday, DCI said detectives from DCI Kisii Central teamed up with fraud investigators from Mogo Auto Limited and arrested two suspects accused of stealing and unlawfully unlocking financed mobile devices.

“The team raided a phone repair shop at Market Plaza, arresting the suspects, identified as Duncan Ontita Anyaga and Phares Nyagaka Luke, off guard,” DCI said. 

During the operation, the sleuths recovered over 500 assorted mobile phones and motherboards.
