26-Year-Old Woman Arrested After Attempting to Smuggle Drugs to Detained Boyfriend

Police officers have arrested a 26-year-old woman after she allegedly attempted to sneak rolls of bhang to her boyfriend, who is being held at Buruburu Police Station.

In a statement on Monday, September 21, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, Bernice Achieng came to the station to visit her boyfriend and asked officers at the report office desk to pass a loaf of bread to him. 

However, the police officers became suspicious when they noticed the bread package was unsealed. 

“A visit to a detained boyfriend instead landed a 26-year-old woman in police custody, after officers manning Buruburu Police Station's report office desk discovered bhang hidden inside a loaf of bread. 

“Bernice Achieng had come to see her boyfriend, currently held in police custody, and asked officers to pass him the loaf,” read the statement. 

The officers searched the package and recovered five rolls of bhang and a matchbox buried deep in the loaf of bread.

The police conducted a further search on the 26-year-old and discovered seven additional rolls of bhang in her jacket.

“The find prompted a further search, turning up a further seven rolls of bhang stuffed in the pocket of her jacket, making it twelve rolls in total recovered,” DCI added. 

The suspect is in police custody and is set to be arraigned in court. Meanwhile, the exhibits have been secured. 

This comes days after a woman was arrested at Ruai Police Station after allegedly attempting to smuggle tools into the station concealed inside a meal meant for three remanded suspects.

In a statement on September 16, the DCI said Christine Njoki Gitau, 18, arrived at the station reception and requested to visit three friends who were being held over robbery with violence and gang rape allegations.

"A prison visit meant to deliver a meal instead blew a plot wide open after sharp-eyed officers at Ruai Police Station unravelled a scheme to hand remanded suspects the very tools of their escape," the statement read.

According to the DCI, Gitau was carrying a plate of rice and meat, which she presented as a meal for the three suspects. 

However, officers became suspicious and subjected the food to a routine inspection.

The DCI said the inspection of the food allegedly uncovered items that were not part of the meal, raising suspicions that they had been deliberately concealed for the suspects.

"But the cell sentry's instincts proved sharper than her disguise. A routine scoop through the food led to a shocking discovery: buried beneath the meal lay a pair of pliers and a shear, cold-steel tools meant to aid the escape of the three suspects," the statement further read.
