Eight people have been injured after a building collapsed in Mamboleo, Kisumu County. 

In a statement on Monday, September 21, Kenya Red Cross said a multi-agency team was deployed following the incident. 

The organization noted that six of the injured were treated on site while two others, who were in critical condition, were evacuated and referred to hospital for further medical attention.

“Alongside a multi-agency response team, we have attended to eight injured people. 

“Six were treated on site, while two in critical condition were referred to hospital,” read the statement in part.

Kenya Red Cross also said all residents were successfully evacuated from the collapsed building.

The building collapsed on Monday morning at around 6:00 a.m. Authorities are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The incident comes days after a five-storey building under construction collapsed in Ogembo, Kisii County. 

In a statement on Tuesday, September 9, the Kenya Red Cross said people were feared trapped inside the collapsed building. 

The organization noted that its teams, alongside Kisii County emergency response teams, police, and fire and rescue services, were responding to the incident to locate and rescue those trapped. 

“A five-storey building under construction collapsed in Ogembo, Kisii County.

“The Kenya Red Cross is currently responding alongside County response teams, police and Fire and Rescue Services in a multi-agency search and rescue operation for persons believed to be trapped,” read the statement. 

The organization also noted that county ambulance services and E-plus Medical Services (EMS) have been deployed to the scene to provide emergency medical support to anyone injured in the collapse.

One person was later confirmed dead after being trapped under the debris.

Kisii County Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, who visited the scene, said preliminary observations raised concerns about the quality of the construction materials used at the site.
