President William Ruto on Monday, September 21, held talks with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York. 

In a statement, President Ruto said the discussions focused on the longstanding partnership between Kenya and the US. 

The two discussed the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), noting that it would strengthen trade between Africa and the US. 

“Held talks with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Kenya and the United States share a strong and enduring partnership anchored in trade, security, technology and development. We welcome the extension of AGOA, which will strengthen trade between Africa and the United States and expand economic opportunities,” read the statement.

Ruto and Rubio also discussed broadening cooperation in emerging areas, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and its application in health, education and financial services. 

Further, the two leaders exchanged views on the responsible governance of rapidly advancing AI technologies and explored opportunities for cooperation in critical minerals and nuclear energy.

On regional peace and security, President Ruto and Rubio discussed sustaining the security mission in Somalia, supporting efforts to promote stability in Haiti and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. 

“On regional peace and security, we discussed sustaining the security mission in Somalia, supporting stability in Haiti, and addressing the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan through efforts towards a ceasefire, political settlement and continued regional engagement,” Ruto added. 

The Head of State is currently in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). 

President Ruto flew out of the country on Saturday night, September 19, together with First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto. 

He is expected to advance Kenya’s investment drive, unlock more African and global capital, and strengthen Africa’s role in shaping the global digital and AI economy.

Meanwhile, at the UN General Assembly address, President Ruto will champion an Africa-financing-Africa approach.

“With Africa holding more than $4 trillion in domestic savings and assets, Kenya will call for reforms and international guarantees to unlock more African capital for infrastructure and enterprise,” said Mohamed. 

He will also highlight the National Infrastructure Fund, which is designed to mobilize up to $40 billion without adding to public debt, and advance Africa’s call for greater representation in global institutions.
