Why KURA Has Extended Closure of Busy Nairobi Road

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has extended the closure of a section of Eldoret Road in Nairobi as construction works on a vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River continue.

In a notice on Monday, September 28,nthe authority noted that the road section was initially scheduled to remain closed from 6 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026, to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026. 

However, KURA has now extended the closure until the end of December to allow the ongoing construction works to be completed.

"We wish to notify the general public that the closure of the section of Eldoret Road, Nairobi, earlier communicated to run from 6 AM Monday 18th May, 2026 till 6 PM Friday 18th September, 2026, has been extended until 6 PM Wednesday 30th December, 2026," the notice read.

KURA said the extension was necessary because the project had encountered logistical and site-related challenges that affected the construction timeline.

"The extension has become necessary due to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges encountered during the construction of the Vehicular Bridge across the Nairobi River, including delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment, which were beyond the contractor's control," the notice added.

KURA said it remains focused on ensuring that the bridge works are completed while meeting the required standards for safety and quality.

"The Authority and the contractor remain committed to completing the works to the required safety and quality standards within the revised timeline," the notice further read.

KURA also urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officers and marshals as the alternative traffic arrangements remain in effect throughout the extended closure period.

"We urge motorists to continue using the alternative routes shown in the sketch and to follow the guidance of traffic police and marshals. The traffic arrangements remain in place for the duration of the extension," the notice concluded.

At the same time, KURA has announced a two-month closure of the Mlolongo-Kamulu Road.

In a notice on Monday, the authority said the road will be closed from Thursday, October 1, 2026, to Tuesday, December 1, 2026.

KURA noted that the closure will facilitate essential construction works along the road. 

"The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) wishes to notify the general public of a temporary traffic disruption along the Mlolongo–Kamulu (Quarry Road), effective Thursday, 1 October 2026 until Tuesday, 1 December 2026.

"This disruption will allow the contractor to carry out essential construction works along the affected section," read the notice. 

KURA also mentioned that traffic will be diverted during the period. 

The authority advised motorists with light to medium vehicles to use the Syokimau-Katani Road and Syokimau-Parliament Road during the closure. 

Meanwhile, heavy commercial vehicles will use the Tuffoam Road to get to their destinations. 

"Motorists are advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected section and to follow all traffic signs and instructions given by police officers and traffic marshals, who will be stationed on site to ensure smooth traffic flow," the notice added.
