17 people lost their lives in an early morning accident on Saturday, October 3, at Salama along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif confirmed the fatalities and added that several others were injured.
Khalif stated that the accident occurred when a lorry driver lost control after a reported brake failure and rammed into five vehicles, including a 14-seater van.
The fatalities include the lorry driver, three passengers in the truck, and several occupants of the van, who were headed to a prayer service,
Survivors were ferried to the Sultan Hamud Sub-county Hospital. Medical superintendent Dr Stephen Mwangangi confirmed that six survivors had been treated and discharged.

The bodies of the deceased were ferried to the nearby mortuaries, awaiting a post-mortem and identification by families and friends of the victims. Traffic police officers in the area have since cleared the wreckage from the highway.
The accident adds to the list of several carnages that have claimed Kenyan lives along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway within a span of two months.
It came barely days after two people lost their lives in a road accident along Mombasa Road after a Dreamline bus collided with a truck at the Mgalani area near Taru in Kwale County.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Dreamline bus, which was heading toward Mombasa, rammed into the rear of the truck, sustaining extensive damage.
On Wednesday, September 16, 5 people were killed following a collision between a matatu and a trailer along the highway.
The gruesome accident occurred at Kapiti Plains area in Machakos County and involved a 14-seater matatu belonging to Kinatwa Sacco, which was travelling from Nairobi towards Mombasa, and a trailer moving in the opposite direction.
The injured passengers were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital for medical attention.
