Sifuna is under pressure to follow in the footsteps of the late Raila, the only leader who resigned as an MP after changing parties.

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has dared Edwin Sifuna to resign as Nairobi Senator.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 5, Kaluma claimed that the law demands that Sifuna resign after he ditched ODM, the party he used to become a senator, for the Equality Party (TEP).

He argued that if Sifuna was honest about his adherence to constitutionalism and the rule of law, then he should seek a fresh mandate under his new party.

"By law, you’re deemed to have resigned as an ODM member and Senator.

"You say you’re running to ensure constitutionalism and the rule of law. Do now vacate your office as ODM Senator and seek re-election in TEP," Kaluma said.

Kaluma echoed Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who opined that Sifuna should follow the path taken by former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga.

Cherargei reminded Sifuna that when Raila did not agree with the ideals of FORD-Kenya in 1995, he resigned as Lang'ata MP and sought a fresh mandate under the National Development Party (NDP).

"There is an obsession among everyone to speak in the spirit of Raila Odinga. They have not told us that when Baba did not believe in Particular ideals, he resigned and ran under his desired political party," the Senator stated.

Meanwhile, Sifuna announced that TEP would soon rebrand to the Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM).

"The Equitable Party will soon be rebranding to the Linda Mwananchi Movement. You are all welcome. Please register," the Nairobi Senator declared.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua congratulated Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna after he unveiled his new political vehicle, The Equitable Party (TEP).

Gachagua described the launch of the new party as the beginning of Sifuna’s journey towards national leadership.

"My cousin, Senator Edwin Sifuna, congratulations are in order on the launch of your political party today. Democracy must prevail. To those who thought they could stop an idea whose time had come, we are sorry. Your time is up!" He stated.
