In a statement on Thursday, October 8, the authority urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during the current October–December (OND) rainfall season. 

“Heavy storms were experienced in Kisumu East afternoon, 8 October 2026. As we continue through the October–December (OND) rainfall season, the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) reminds the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions,” read the advisory in part. 

Kenya Met advised the public to stay updated on official weather forecasts and warnings and cautioned against seeking shelter under trees during thunderstorms. 

“Do not seek shelter under trees during thunderstorms,” the weatherman warned.

The authority also urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid crossing flooded roads, waterways, and low-lying areas.

Further, KMSA advised the public to avoid outdoor activities during heavy storms to minimize the risk of harm.

On Thursday afternoon heavy downpour and strong winds were experienced across Kisumu County. 

The storm blew off rooftops and damaged property, with the extent of the losses yet to be established.

The heavy rains also brought down billboards and trees in the lakeside city, forcing traders who had been sheltering along corridors to seek alternative shelter.

Earlier, Kenya Met had predicted rainfall across 25 counties, including West Pokot, Siaya, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bungoma, Kakamega, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Kericho, Kisii, Homabay, Kisumu, and Mandera. 

The authority also predicted rainfall in Wajir, Marsabit, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu counties.

Further, KMSA warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots in Turkana, Samburu, and Marsabit counties. 

“Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Samburu, and Marsabit Counties,” the authority announced.
