The Interior PS also said the complex will include a student village for medical trainees and researchers, strengthening Kenya's capacity for specialist training, innovation, and research.

PS Omollo noted that the hospital will serve millions of Kenyans from Rift Valley and Western Kenya regions once it is operational.

The medical facility is also expected to serve residents of the wider East African region.

“Once operational, the facility will serve millions across the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and the wider East African region, supporting the country's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals under the Social Health Authority (SHA),” he stated.

Further, PS Omollo said the project is part of the government’s plan to expand access to quality, affordable medical services.

This comes weeks after PS Omollo gave progress of the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital in Lurambi.

In an update on Tuesday, September 29, Omollo said the project is part of broader reforms supporting the country’s pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The 350-bed Level 6 facility, whose construction stalled for more than four years, is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

The project regained momentum after the county government handed it over to the national government, with KDF engineers subsequently taking charge of the construction works.

According to Omollo, the KDF engineers took over the works and helped revive the stalled development, paving the way for the facility to move towards completion.

The hospital has been designed as a regional centre of excellence, with the capacity to provide a wide range of specialized medical services to patients from Kakamega and the wider western Kenya region.

"Designed as a regional centre of excellence, the hospital will offer specialised services, including oncology treatment, maternal and neonatal care, renal services, intensive care, advanced diagnostics and emergency response," he said.
