Major government projects in Homa Bay, Siaya and Migori are reshaping infrastructure and public services, with investments spanning transport, housing, healthcare, sports, markets and electricity.

The developments include completed facilities and ongoing construction works that residents say are beginning to change daily life across the three counties.

In Homa Bay, the Government Delivery Unit has listed 94 priority projects valued at more than Sh60 billion, making it the largest project portfolio among the four Luo Nyanza counties.

Key developments include the rebuilt Homa Bay Pier, the completed fish market at Koginga Beach and the 12,000-seater Raila Odinga Stadium.

The projects are expected to support economic activities, improve facilities for traders and residents, and expand the county’s capacity to host sporting events.

The pier and fish market are particularly relevant to communities whose livelihoods depend on fishing and related commercial activities.

In neighbouring Siaya, construction of the Dhogoye Bridge is progressing, with the 200-metre structure expected to provide a link connecting Bondo towards Busia.

For residents in areas previously affected by difficult water crossings, the project represents a potential improvement in safety and mobility.

Albina Ochola, a resident of Urima, recalled the difficulties people experienced when crossing the water before the bridge was built.

She explained that the strong currents made the journey dangerous, particularly for those who could not secure their footing.

"The water was deep, and it was flowing very fast. If you did not step firmly on the ground, the water would knock you down. Now I know that once this bridge is completed, everything will be better. Even now, I will not move away from my home," she said.

Road infrastructure is also undergoing improvements in Siaya, where works are progressing along the route from Kodiaga through Rabango, Awelo and Dominion towards Usenge.

The road projects are expected to improve connectivity between communities and facilitate the movement of people and goods.

Thomas Juma, a boda boda operator in Siaya Town, pointed to the road improvements and other developments as visible signs of ongoing infrastructure investment in the county.

"The road from Siaya through Kodiaga to Usenge has been well tarmacked, and we have witnessed other developments, including Affordable Housing and stadiums," he stated.

Beyond roads and bridges, Siaya is also experiencing construction under the Affordable Housing Programme, alongside stadium development and ongoing hospital works.

Residents have also drawn a distinction between the pace of national government projects and some county-led initiatives.

They say developments such as affordable housing and stadium construction have progressed quickly, creating a sense that projects previously discussed in plans are now taking shape on the ground.

In Migori, electricity infrastructure has been a major focus, with investments aimed at strengthening power transmission and distribution capacity.

The Awendo-Isebania transmission line and Masaba substation were energised in June 2025, marking a key milestone in the expansion of the region’s electricity network.

The Sondu-Homa Bay section of the South Nyanza power line was subsequently energised in January 2026, adding to the infrastructure supporting electricity supply across the region.
