DCI arrested a former Credit Control Officer over the suspected theft of Ksh89,579,274 from his former employer.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a former Credit Control Officer over the suspected theft of Ksh89,579,274 from his former employer.

Detectives attached to the DCI's  Banking Fraud Investigations Unit (BFIU) mounted a pursuit of the suspect, Bernard Kariuki Ngugi, after an investigation into alleged insider fraud, digital manipulation and suspicious financial transactions

BFIU officers established that the suspect diverted millions of shillings to three firms which had not done any business with the insurance firm.

"It was established that Ksh35.27 million was channelled through Auris General Merchants Ltd, Ksh32.68 million through Donbitz Global Limited and a further Ksh21.63 million through Pedram Global Limited.

"The three entities, according to investigators, had no legitimate business relationship with the insurance company and were not entitled to receive the payments, raising red flags over how they found their way into the company’s payment system," DCI wrote.

The DCI found that the withdrawals and transfers were made in circumstances designed to obscure the origin and movement of the funds.

Investigating officers compiled their findings and presented the suspect's file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which agreed with the recommendation to charge the suspect with theft by servant, money laundering and other related offences.

He was subsequently trailed and arrested in Nairobi before being arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.

However, the suspect pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was released on a bond of Sh2 million, with an alternative cash bail of Ksh800,000. The case is scheduled for a pre-trial mention on November 10, 2026.

Elsewhere, the DCI appealed to members of the public to give information on the whereabouts of Stephenson Oduor Ouma alias Kodhek.

The agency declared Kodhek a wanted man pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court in Criminal Case No. E647 of 2023.

DCI said that he is wanted in connection with alleged offences of Conspiracy to Defraud, contrary to Section 317, and Stealing by Agent, contrary to Section 283(3) of the Penal Code, following allegations that he misappropriated insurance premiums at Signature Insurance Agency.
