The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is reportedly exploring two strategies for selecting a gubernatorial candidate in Mombasa County as Governor Hassan Joho is set to exit office in 2022.

Suleiman Shahbal recently joined ODM from Jubilee, and has been meeting and accompanying ODM Leader Raila Odinga on his engagements including the recent Muranga event where artists were celebrating increased earnings.

On the other hand, Abdullswamad Nassir has been a member of ODM for the past 10 years and has been critical in pushing the party’s agenda in the Coastal region.

Since both are interested in the seat, ODM is keen to ensure that the process for selecting the best candidate is fair, and acceptable to avoid any aftermath that could cost the party.

In view of the above, the party has come up with two strategies it intends to employ in the Mombasa contest. The first involves an opinion poll that has already been commissioned to identify who is the most popular between the two.

The poll will aid the party to identify who between the two has the best chances of winning in the 2022 General Election.

In addition to the poll, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna noted that consensus will also be used to provide an avenue for the candidates to negotiate between them and if possible, the less popular candidate, should agree to support the more popular candidate in the opinion poll.

“… Tutawapa fursa waweze kuzungumza kati yao na sisi kama viongozi wa chama tuone kama wanaweza kuona ni vipi amabapo wanaweza kumsupport mmoja wao ambaye science inatuonyesha kuwa anaweza kushinda," Sifuna said.
