An exposé by BBC Africa dubbed ‘Baby Stealers’ that addressed Kenya’s child trafficking syndicate has been nominated for the Emmys under the News and Current Affairs category.
The exposé received nomination for the international award on Thursday August 19, 2021. It will battle out with features that include; ‘The Hunt for Gaddafi’s Billions’ in a virtual award gala set for September 28, 2021.
“As the world continues to grapple with the pandemic and unrest every place, access to reliable news is more crucial than ever.
“We salute the outstanding work and great courage of our nominees for reporting on difficult and sensitive matters, despite the global health crisis and many other obstacles thrown at them,” Bruce Paisner, President of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said.
If it wins, the expose will be the first ever Kenyan piece to win the prestigious award.

In the expose, BBC Africa dug deep into the child trafficking syndicate in the country, showcasing how children were being sold for as little as Ksh40,000 in Nairobi and its environs.
According to the expose, some children are stole from their struggling parents and sold to medical facilities that are suspected to be part of the syndicate.
The expose elicited massive reactions with the Inspector General of Police calling for investigations into the issue.
Following the investigations, four people were arrested, with the government indicating that anyone involved in the illegal business will be dealt with in accordance to the law.
