Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed demands by a section of Mt Kenya leaders that the region must provide a Deputy President in 2022.

Speaking during an interview on TV47 Tuesday morning, Gachagua held the view that having the President’s position or that of the DP does not translate to benefits for a particular region.

He noted that focus should be on equitable development across the country, starting from those at the bottom heading up.

Citing the current Jubilee administration, Rigathi argued that President Uhuru Kenyatta hails from Mt Kenya but the region “is suffering”.

"Mt Kenya region is not looking for the deputy president's position in 2022 because we currently have the presidency and we are suffering,” he said.

His remarks come a few days after Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria noted that any candidate interested in Mt Kenya’s support for the presidency must offer the region the DP’s position.

He also demanded that presidential candidate interested in Mt Kenya’s backing should also offer 40 per cent of all senior jobs including in the Cabinet and State parastatals.

"The position of the DP is non-negotiable for the Mt Kenya region commensurate with our votes. We also demand 40% of all government appointments,” the Gatundu South MP stated.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the DP may be scouting for a running mate from the Mt Kenya region in a bid to have its backing.
