Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has predicted that ODM Leader Raila Odinga’s Luo Nyanza stronghold will have the highest number of independent candidates in 2022.
According to Ahmednasir, the region will also produce the highest number of independently elected lawmakers in Parliament and County assemblies.
While explaining his prediction, Ahmednasir claimed that most leaders will fallout with ODM; the dominant party in the region during its nominations.
He alleged that some leaders will be locked out of the nomination due to “high auction fees” for the party’s ticket.
“In 2022 Luo Nyanza will have the highest number of independent candidates and independent elected Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies...Because of the high auction fees, popular but poor candidates will be priced out of ODM’s tickets!” he tweeted.

The Luo Nyanza region is a stronghold of Odinga. Over the years, the region has supported him and the ODM party overwhelmingly.
In the past few elections, most leaders who’ve gone against ODM have always had a tough time winning. However, in the last general election and a series of by-elections that came afterwards, some leaders won while vying against ODM.
In 2019 during a by-election in Ugenya, David Ochieng defeated ODM’s Chris Karani to win the parliamentary seat in Odinga’s home County.
In 2017, Shakeel Shabbir Ahmed won the Kisumu East Parliamentary candidate as an independent candidate after controversially losing in the ODM nominations.
All eyes are now on the ODM party as we head into 2022.
