Kirinyaga County Detectives are looking for 14 students who managed to jump off a moving 2NK Sacco Nairobi-bound matatu.
On Friday, November 19, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation revealed that the students from Fred's Grammer Mixed Secondary School had boarded the matatu for their mid-term break at Karatina town.
However, while approaching Kibingoti along the Nyeri-Nairobi highway, the driver identified by the DCI as John Maina became suspicious after smelling a strong aroma and seeing in his rearview smoke emanating from the back.
"Upon checking the rearview mirror, he was shocked to see billowing smoke as the seemingly excited teenagers passed a joint amongst themselves, while others imbibed alcoholic drinks.

"The concerned driver urged them to stop, but the intoxicated students became unruly, threatening him with dire consequences, as others warned him to mind his business and concentrate on driving them to Nairobi," the statement read in part.
Maina was then forced to make a hurried decision by changing directions from Nairobi to take them to Sagana Police station. On realizing the driver's intentions, the students risked themselves by jumping from the moving matatu.
As they disembarked from the matatu using the windows, the students left behind their luggage, half-smoked joints and half-filled liquors.
Maina notified the police of the incident leading to the summoning of the school's Principal to assist in establishing the students involved in the act.
