A man suspected to be a former Al Shabaab member committed suicide and killed a couple after he detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

According to a police report seen by Nairobi Leo, the suspected bomber identified as John Odhiambo Ondieki committed the act Tuesday, December 7.

The couple who lost their lives during the incident is Petro Onyango, aged 54, and Mary Otieno,40.

Their 14-year-old daughter Nancy Aoko was injured during the incident.

Ms Otieno succumbed to the injury on the spot while her husband Onyango was rushed to Nyakach Sub-County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 14-year-old daughter who was severely injured was rushed to Katito Hospital.

Officers from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and Bomb Disposal Unit based in Kisumu visited the scene of the tragedy to conduct investigations on the matter.

According to locals, the bomber had tried to kill his wife on December 17, 2020.

This is after he detonated an IED at Katitio market with an aim of ending the life of his wife over cheating allegations.

The woman is said to have survived the ordeal and disappeared never to be seen again.

It is after the incident that locals say the suspect disappeared from the area only to emerge on Tuesday and claim the lives of the couple and his.

He is believed to have joined an Al Shabaab group, during his disappearance, where he was trained on handling explosives.
