President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday, December 12, defied protocol and invited his handshake partner the ODM leader Raila Odinga to speak.
In his address, the President identified Raila as the man to thank for his contribution towards the refurbishment of the Uhuru Gardens.
The garden was given a new look in an effort to preserve its history and the role it played in Kenya's independence struggle.
"Uhuru Gardens was chosen to celebrate our independence because our founding fathers wanted generations to recall the darkness of our colonial past but not to be stuck in the pessimism," Uhuru said.
President Uhuru noted that the opposition chief advised him on various issues regarding the garden and went further to invite him to speak.

"I would wish to identify one person who walked with me and even advised me on how to go during the refurbishment of this Uhuru Garden. The man Raila Odinga has been key through his advice. And as I can see these Kenyans want you to address them, please come and say something," Uhuru said.
At the time the ODM leader was speaking, President Uhuru had finished his speech but he only came back to make closing remarks.
Deputy President William Ruto had earlier spoken and he is the one who welcomed the President.
