The accident comes after at least twenty people died after an accident involving a matatu and trailer at Taru and Samburu along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway on July 8.

Confirming the accident, Coast Regional Traffic Boss Peter Maina said that the twenty died on the spot in the head-on collision accident.

Following the incident, NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso in a statement said that the driver of the matatu that collided with the trailer could have occasioned the accident for failing to comply with traffic rules.

"The preliminary incident report indicates that this tragedy and the senseless loss of lives could have been avoided if the matatu driver had maintained lane discipline," Shioso said.
