The incident comes at a time the region has enjoyed over a year of calm with the last similar incident recorded on May 4, 2020.
At the time, bandits ambushed Eastleigh village in Igembe Central, killing two people and stealing 25 cattle.
They also shot six more animals.
Residents called on the government to disarm the bandits and restore peace, saying they have become a soft target for the attacks.
Alternatively, they told Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to arm them so that they can defend themselves.
The residents equally demanded the reopening of the region’s conservancy, saying it was helpful in the recovery of stolen livestock.
In November 2019, Police in Meru recovered stolen livestock in three separate incidents across the county and rescued an abducted herder from bandits in one of the incidents in Igembe North Sub County.
Vincent Kinyua, a herder, had his ears cut after the armed raiders burst into a grazing field between Mariera and Ndumuru in Igembe North Sub-County.
Police trailed the bandits and managed to recover 110 goats that were stolen along with the abducted hearder.
