The Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has announced that his officers have nabbed three medical officers behind the rampant child trafficking syndicate in Nairobi.
In a statement, Mutyambai noted that local hospitals and children homes are among the key breeding grounds for the vice.
He further noted that some senior medical officers in public hospitals are suspected to be the facilitators of the crime.
“…It is unfortunate that it was realised senior medical officers in collusion with the child smugglers are highly involved. So far, three medical officers from a public hospital in Nairobi have been arrested in connection with the offence and will be arraigned before court,” Mutyambai said.
In a bid to address the issue of child trafficking country wide, IG Mutyambai has directed county police commanders to closely work with children homes and other facilities handling children affairs.
The police boss has urged members of the public to volunteer information that may lead to the arrest of child traffickers, adding that the information volunteered will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Meanwhile, the BBC recently exposed a child trafficking syndicate where young babies are stolen from their parents and sold in the black market for as low as Sh50,000.
The expose and pressure from local media and Kenyans online prompted the police to act leading to the three arrests.
