The driver of two Cuban doctors who were kidnapped in Mandera in 2019 by Al-Shabaab militants will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
In a court ruling on Wednesday, Milimani Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi found Issack Ibrein Robow guilty of five offences.
These included the commission of a terrorist act, aiding a terrorist act, false pretence in obtaining registration and being in the country unlawfully.
The magistrate slapped Robow with a life sentence in the commissioning of the terrorist act and 25 years on the account of kidnapping.
Robow was further handed 15 years behind bars for helping the Al-Shabaab militants in their ordeal and 6 months imprisonment for obtaining registration by false pretense.
However, through his lawyer, Robow indicated that he will appeal the ruling. He is a former employee of Mandera County.
In the abduction ordeal in 2019, the two Cuban doctors were abducted in Mandera before being held hostage in Somalia for over a year. They were released in October 2021 after negotiations.
The court earlier heard that the vehicle Robow was driving had five passengers on board. One, a police officer, died on the spot while two escaped. Two, the Cuban doctors, were abducted.
They were among the specialist doctors who arrived in Kenya in 2018.
