The Deputy President has revealed why there was opposition in the nomination of Rigathi Gachagua as Kenya Kwanza running mate.

Deputy President William Ruto has revealed that there was opposition to his choice of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate.

Speaking on Monday, June 20, in Nakuru, the DP said that there was talk that the Mathira MP was a strong person politically and therefore not wanted.

Ruto said that he chose the lawmaker because he wanted a strong person on his side so as to form a formidable force.

“Wakati nilichagua Rigathi Gachagua kama naibu wangu, watu wengi walikuwa wanakataa wakisema Rigathi is a strong person na wanahitaji mtu mwenye ako chini kidogo. Mimi niliwaambia huyo strong person ndio nilikuwa nataka,” Ruto stated.

He added that some leaders felt inferior when their colleague got elevated, but he maintained that he wanted his camp to win together.

“Mimi nataka tufaulu pamoja na tutafaulu kama tutaungana wale watu wenye uwezo ndio tutekeleze yale mambo ambayo tunataka kuyatekeleza,” Ruto added.

His remarks came even as Tujibebe Wakenya Party leader Willliam Babogo said that the nomination of Gachagua as Kenya Kwanza running mate brought problems.

Kabogo said that the nomination of Martha Karua as Azimio running mate eroded the popularity of Kenya Kwanza in Mt Kenya.

"The nomination of Martha Karua has eroded the popularity of Kenya Kwanza in Mt Kenya. Karua's nomination gobbled at least 4 percent of DP William Ruto's popularity in the region. The nomination of Rigathi Gachagua as Ruto's deputy has brought problems," Kabogo said.
